This icon-egg is a depiction of the Holy Mother Theotokos of Kazan (Kazanskaya Bogomater' - Казанская Богоматерь) with the Crist Child. Russian wooden religious egg on a pedestal is hand carved and painted, also richly adorned by gold embossed riza-halo above the head of Madonna and Jesus. The letters MP and ΘΥ “Meter Theou” abbreviation on both sides of her head, meaning “Mother of God.” The child Jesus, as indicated by the IC XC “Iesous Khristos” abbreviation on the right side of his head. The deep religious history of the Russian people has long been epitomized in the carving and decorating of the famous hand painted eggs. Russian egg is the perfect symbol for Love, Life, Birth, and Faith.
