The Littlest Matryoshska by Corinne Demas Bliss, illustrated by Kathryn Brown, tells the tale of six nesting doll sisters on a voyage from Russia to a toy store in America. Upon arrival, Nina, the youngest sister gets swept off a shelf, and must go on a perilous journey to reunite with her sisters. Along with the book, a set of Russian imported, hand painted, and hand crafted traditional Matryoshska style nesting dolls are included. In Russian, the word "Matryoshka" is associated with fertility and motherhood. That is why the many of the first Matryoshka dolls utilized the image of portly, chubby-cheeked mother on the outer doll with the likenesses of her numerous children painted on the smaller inner dolls. Today, when artists are painting a variety of subjects, the image of the robust and cheerful mother is still one of the most popular.
