International Women’s Day was originally called International Working Women’s Day. In 1913 Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Saturday in February (by Julian calendar then used in Russia). The Russian holiday celebrates all women, including mothers, grandmothers, daughters, and girlfriends.
How is International Women’s Day Honored in Russia?
This holiday is most often celebrated in the family circle with a celebratory meal and champagne. Another popular choice to celebrate is by visiting friends. Men and women give flowers, poetry, chocolate, and other gifts to their mothers, wives, grandmothers, sisters and daughters. Some Russian men like to undertake all household duties on this day (we like this idea so that women can enjoy a full day of rest.
