It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s a nesting doll!

Every year at the world famous New Mexico Balloon Fiesta, The Russian Store has a booth, one of our best sellers is the Aeolos Hot Air Balloon Nesting Doll. Aeolos is one of the many popular balloons that fill up the New Mexican sky with a rainbow of colors. It’s appropriately named after the Greek God of the Wind (actually perhaps the slavic god of the wind Stribog might be more appropriate for The Russian Store :) )

Odd Uses for Nesting Dolls

I saw a movie called Transsiberian the other day, and noticed that nesting dolls played a role in the plot, and were used in a way that was most certainly non-traditional. It got me thinking of other non-traditional ways that one could use a Nesting Doll. This was what I came up with:

Russian Fairytale: Kolobok, Round Bun

Once upon a time an old man and woman lived in a village.

One day the old man said to the old woman: “Grandmother, go scrape in the flour-tin and sweep in the corn bin, perhaps you will get enough flour to make a Kolobok.”

The old woman went off and scraped round the flour-tin and swept the bottom of the corn-bin and she got a couple of handfuls of flour.

She mixed the floor with sour cream and shaped it into a Kolobok – a kind of little round bun. Then she ba

Known by many names –nesting dolls, matryoshka dolls, babushka dolls, nested dolls, stacking dolls– Russian Nesting Dolls have captured the attention of children, adults, doll enthusiasts, and art collectors across the globe. From their introduction to the world at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900, to the modern day, the almost deceptively simple concept of a set of smaller dolls nestled within larger dolls has endured not only as a popular children’s toy, or a collectible decoration, but as an icon synonymous with Russian culture.

Russian Fairytale: Masha and the Bear
